Event postponed: School of Journalism 20th Anniversary featuring Tanya Talaga

It is with great disappointment that we regret to announce the postponement of the 20th anniversary event celebrating the first graduating class of the School of Journalism.

In light of the global coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, and the considerable uncertainties and difficulties it is causing, we will aim to reschedule the event to take place in the fall.

This has been a difficult decision but the health and safety of students, alumni, guests and colleagues are of the utmost priority to us. Following consultations with faculty, staff and students, it has become increasingly clear in recent days that coming together on March 31 to celebrate 20 years of journalism education at UBC would not be prudent at this time.

In accordance with a recommendation from Provincial Medical Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, the BC Centre for Disease Control, Ministry of Health and Vancouver Coastal Health, the university is cancelling or postponing all on-campus and off-campus events with more than 50 people (including sporting events), whether indoors or outdoors, that are organized by students, faculty and staff.

We apologize for any inconvenience that the 20th anniversary cancellation may cause.

We’re happy to answer any questions you might have, and we will keep you posted as we have more details about the plans for a rescheduled event. For information on how UBC continues to monitor the development of the situation, including resources, click here.

Thank you for being part of the UBC Journalism community and best wishes for good health to those among us who are dealing with the effects of this global crisis.
